Elizabeth I was a total dame. In the best sense of that title. She had smarts, class, guts and determination. She also didn’t feel the need to be defined by a man, or even to marry one. She chose to marry an entire country instead!

She made some rather brilliant comments over her long life and this is one of our favourites – “I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman but I have the heart and stomach of a king!” We doubt that she ever saw herself as weak and feeble, or thought that women were on any level, but she definitely knew how to pick just the right words to win people over in an argument!
